Happy Earth Day from Team Ritual! At HQ, we talk a lot about how to make the best product--for people and the planet. Just like the little step of taking Ritual can have a big impact on how you feel, it’s the small stuff that can make a big difference in the health of the environment. Here are some of the small-but-mighty ways we’re making a difference.
Most omega-3 oils are harvested from fish, squid or krill. Our omega-3 is an algae-derived oil that was developed in conjunction with NASA as part of a program to create sustainable environments in space (yes, really). It’s made by growing algae in vats free from environmental contamination, and it produces almost no waste. Every pound of algal oil used prevents 12 pounds of fish from being caught. Pretty cool, huh?
Not only is our vegan algal oil better for our fishy friends, it’s also free of common contaminants like mercury, PCBs and dioxin that come with fish consumption. Nowadays, most fish oil supplements go through processes to remove contaminants. But once removed, what happens to this contamination waste? We hope it gets incinerated instead of dumped somewhere, but information on this is scarce. We thought: why not start with a cleaner product that’s good for you and good for the environment?
Fewer Ingredients = Smaller Footprint
It’s simple math: the more you use, the more waste you produce. We decrease our footprint by using fewer ingredients, and by not loading up our vitamin with unnecessary megadoses of the nutrients we do include. This means that compared to typical multivitamins, the making of Ritual results in a smaller volume of manufacturing waste byproducts.
When selecting our suppliers, we looked for companies that didn’t just produce high-quality nutrients, but also vibed with our environmentally conscious ethos. In fact, many of our suppliers are located in countries that regulate and mandate environmental impact statements. That means they have to prove they follow eco-friendly manufacturing/disposal practices and what happens to their ingredient if it gets into the environment.
Vegan (Better for the Earth)
It’s hard to refute the evidence: plant-based diets are easier on the planet. For example, one study compared the environmental impact of vegetarians and omnivores and found that a meat-eating diet requires 13 times more fertilizer, 2.9 times more water, 2.5 times more primary energy and 1.4 times more pesticides than a vegetarian diet. At Ritual, we go beyond just using vegetarian, non-GMO, organic and pure ingredients whenever possible. We also use exclusively vegan ingredients, because cutting out animal products altogether is gentler on our planet. From our capsules to our nutrients, we look for components made from plant extracts and minerals that have a low environmental footprint.
While we’d like to believe we’ve thought of everything, if there’s something you think we could do better, we want to hear it! After all, it’s going to take all of us working together to make every day Earth Day.
